How to Avoid Overdecorating

How to Avoid Overdecorating
Perfectly edited minimal room that avoids overdecorating with generous empty space

Overdecorating is one of the most common interior design mistakes β€” and one of the hardest to recognize in your own home. When you're surrounded by your possessions, it's difficult to see the room objectively. Here's how to recognize and avoid overdecorating.

The Overdecorating Trap

Overdecorating happens gradually β€” one object at a time, each addition seeming reasonable in isolation. A new cushion here, a new object on the shelf there, a new throw on the chair. Each individual addition is harmless; the cumulative effect is visual chaos. Avoiding overdecorating requires stepping back regularly to assess the room as a whole.

The Objective Assessment Test

To assess your room objectively: photograph it. A photograph removes the familiarity that makes it difficult to see your own space clearly. Look at the photograph as if it were someone else's room. Does the eye know where to rest? Is there a clear focal point? Are there surfaces with empty space? If the answer to any of these is no, the room may be overdecorated.

The One-In-One-Out Rule

Prevent overdecorating from accumulating: for every new element added to a room, remove one existing element. This maintains a constant total of decorative elements rather than allowing gradual accumulation. If you want to add a new throw, remove an existing cushion. If you want to add a new object to a shelf, remove an existing one.

The Textile Limit

For textiles specifically, set a limit and stick to it: one rug, one set of curtains, one throw, two to three cushions. Our Large Area Mat as the rug, Cream Linen Blackout Curtains at the window, and Chunky Knit Throw in Marigold on the sofa β€” this is a complete textile arrangement. Adding more textiles beyond this limit creates visual clutter rather than richness.

When to Stop

Stop adding when: the eye has a clear focal point, every surface has at least 30% empty space, you can identify the room's dominant color immediately, and the room feels calm rather than busy. These four conditions define a room that's decorated rather than overdecorated.
